田字草是多年生的挺水蕨类水草，有细长的叶柄，柄上生4片小叶，排成十字状，外形像田字，故称田字草。田字草的水上草与水中草相似。水上草有四枚绿色叶片，在水中它很少长出水中叶，一般情况是长水上叶或浮叶。它具有细长的叶柄，当水量稀少时，叶柄会坚挺地把叶片伸到水面以上；当水量充足时，叶柄较柔软，这时叶片则在水面漂浮。最有意思的时候，田字草在晚上还会“睡觉”，也就是叶子会收缩在一起，宛若安睡。
